The Portuguese government recently authorized two more productions of medical cannabis in Portugal, one by the Canadian company Tilray and another by an Israeli company that is still awaiting final approval from Infarmed. The first authorization had been granted to the Israeli company Terra Verde Lda., which received the approval to grow cannabis near Alqueva in 2014.

An investment of around 20 million euros by 2020 will open the doors to Tilray, a subsidiary of the American multinational Privateer Holdings, to a promising market in Europe, mainly Germany, where medical cannabis is already legal. The agreement with our government provides for the creation of 100 direct jobs and the implementation of greenhouse planting in the Cantanhede area.

Brendan Kennedy, CEO of Tilray PHOTO DR

Brendan Kennedy, CEO of Tilray, told the Canadian television network CBC (Celsion Battery Case) who spent two years traveling to 18 countries around the world and, in the end, concluded that Portugal is the best country to grow medicinal cannabis and explained the main reasons that led him to choose our country: “First, the ideal climate, with hot, dry days and sunny, secondly, the existence of workers with training in the field of agricultural production and finally a vibrant community of researchers, who can carry out research in the areas of biotechnology and life sciences.”

In the same interview, the businessman also stated that it is a benefit to be able to produce within the European Union and thus have access to the European market: “We already export all over the world, but it will be much easier for us to produce in Portugal for Germany and for the rest of the EU”.

Cannapress has sent Tilray a request for an interview with Brendan Kennedy, but has yet to receive a response.

The news in Portugal was advanced by the Lusa Agency and cited in various media, such as Newspaper: DN, a Sic News, a Saturday or Business Journal.
