The Ordem dos Médicos (OM) will make public its position on medical cannabis tomorrow morning, a few hours before the plenary debate in the Assembly of the Republic.
The information was confirmed today to Cannapress by the President himself, Miguel Guimarães, who also advanced that the OM's opinion will be favorable to the legalization of cannabis for medicinal purposes.
It is recalled that Miguel Guimarães had already announced, in an interview with the newspaper Public in February last year, that the OM would study the therapeutic potential of medical cannabis, having proposed to analyze the scientific evidence on the matter during the year 2017. At the time, the Chairman of the OM explained that the process, however , would be triggered by the National Council for Medicines Policy and the pharmaceutical industry, through Infarmed (the regulatory body for the activity of medical and drug therapies in Portugal), and also by political parties.
More recently, on the 9th of December, Miguel Guimarães confirmed again to the Public that OM is aware that cannabis is already used for medicinal purposes in several countries and in several pathologies and he sees no reason why this cannot happen in Portugal. However, it sent the final opinion to the specialist colleges, as the principle of the OM is that there should always be scientific evidence and reasoning. The final decision was announced for the end of the year, but the OM ended up delaying its disclosure to the same day as the Parliamentary Debate.
Miguel Guimarães also considered, in the same statements to the newspaper Public, that the fact that the Left Bloc's proposal does not define diseases or pathologies means a "window of opportunity" for the OM, which, through its colleges, in case the proposal is approved, will be able to define the clinical circumstances in which the cannabis can be used.
