Vienna discusses cannabis policy at international conference

A International Conference on the Regulation of Cannabis (ICPC) which runs from the 7th to the 9th of December in Vienna (Austria), takes place with the aim of providing considerable contributions to future cannabis policies and regulations, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030 up.

The event follows an event where the World Health Organization (WHO) final recommendations on cannabis will be presented to the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) of the United Nations (UN).

Organized by the FAAAT, this meeting aims to be a global platform for debating and developing innovative proposals to improve cannabis-related policies and practices.

In the special session on the world drug phenomenon (UNGASS 2016), the UN General Assembly requested an increase in the involvement of all interested parties (civil society, scientific academies, the private sector and other interested populations) in the elaboration and updating of an international document on drug policy.

A year later, the CND reiterated this earlier request, by explicitly requiring the provision of opinions and proposals regarding drug policies and regulations by March 2019, the scheduled date for the 62nd session of the CND.

A International Conference on Cannabis Policy responds directly to these requests, through the meeting of interested and affected parties to contribute to the conclusions on this topic.

The event will be attended by several researchers, NGOs, students, civil servants, policymakers, private sector companies, investors and various other stakeholders.

In addition to accompanying the cannabis reclassification process, this event presents the contribution of the global cannabis markets, industrial hemp and their innovations, to carry out the global structuring of sustainable societies – in which cannabis is a decisive part.

The show includes sessions with leading research, industry and policy leaders and a showroom showcasing plant-related foods, products and services. Cannabis Sativa L.

This conference also plans to publish the Report on the links between cannabis policies and the United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development, by the FAAAT and other associated authors, follow-up to CND discussions at the March 2019 session and the UN Human Rights Council, WHO General Assembly and the UN Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

It will also be launched International Political Commission on Cannabis for Sustainable Development as well as the International Observatory on Human Rights and Drug Policy, the latter by the Knowmad Institute.
