Maltese president rules out recreational cannabis

Published

em

The President of the Republic of Malta has abandoned the legalization of cannabis for recreational purposes, he announced at a conference on drugs and mental health on 18 June. A doctor by profession, George Vella argues that caution is needed in regulating what is the most consumed illegal substance in the country.

The president also said that, despite the benefits to be derived from a medical use, extending the legalization to cannabis for recreational purposes is a matter that must be treated with great caution.

George Vella, who participated as a speaker at a conference on drugs and mental health, organized by the OASI Foundation, noted that discussions on any possible legalization of recreational cannabis must take into account the investigations of experts as well as the best practices of other countries in the area.

“If cannabinoids are proven in the future to have a specific medical utility, then there is nothing wrong with using cannabis for that purpose,” said George Vella. The Maltese President and Doctor also states that Malta must be cautious about recreational use and must “take into account investigations into issues such as whether cannabis can act as an entry drug and whether it can result in psychological dependence”.
