Cian and Caoimhe Walsh, two young brothers from Bandon, Ireland, won the ECO-UNESCO award for Young Environmentalists in the Eco-Innovation category, with the project “Hemp for a sustainable future”. The project was developed on the premise that hemp will benefit sustainable agriculture in Ireland.

In an interview with Irish Examiner, Caoimhe noted that “with hemp’s ability to capture an average of 8,9 tonnes of carbon dioxide per acre (almost one hectare), hemp is more efficient at capturing carbon than trees.”

The Walsh brothers' project began to be developed in 2019, when Cian participated in the Youth Climate Assembly, and where he managed to present his proposals on hemp to Dáil Éireann (the assembly of Ireland).

The Irish government undertook, in 2020 Program, to explore the potential of hemp for growing fiber varieties. According to the brothers, “with the cellulose content of hemp fiber around 70%, it can also be used in the manufacture of paper, furniture and pellets, replacing wood, which will accelerate the preservation of forests and their habitats. with less deforestation and the establishment of permanent native forests”.

Why hemp?
In his presentation on the UNESCO website, the Walsh brothers explain how and why they decided to bet on hemp for a more sustainable future. "We believe that farmers are facing extreme pressure to promote climate action and are not being offered viable alternatives to their current farming methods."

The Walsh brothers aspire to create industrial hemp processing facilities “to give a sustainable use of land, which is an alternative for farmers”. At the same time, they hope to educate people through content posted on social media, promote events to spread information about hemp and have a harvest of their own to do research.
