Infarmed and APA publish new rules for the management of medical cannabis waste

As of yesterday, companies licensed to produce medical cannabis in Portugal have new rules applicable to waste management, with priority now being given to composting, anaerobic digestion (biogas production), direct agricultural recovery and only as a last resort disposal landfill or incineration. This measure puts an end to the need to completely destroy plant residues from medical cannabis plantations, which represented costs for companies and prevented them from reusing them for other purposes.
The document issued by the two institutions also states that the list is not exhaustive and that “other destinations may be included as long as they are duly validated by Infarmed and APA, in which case an opinion must be requested from these entities”.
The new rules open up a range of new possibilities for medical cannabis companies, which can replace destruction costs with existing sources of income or cost reduction in their productions.
Cannareporter is following the disclosure of the new measures and will update this news, having sent questions to Infarmed and to some medical cannabis companies licensed in Portugal.
