Medicane obtains GMP license from Infarmed in Campo Maior
MediCane Health Inc. announced this week that its Portuguese subsidiary MHI Cultivo Medicinal has received GMP certification from Infarmed to produce cannabis for medicinal and research purposes. MediCane is the third cannabis company in Portugal to obtain EU-GMP certification, after Holigen and Tilray. MHI was recognized as a PIN – Project of National Interest by the Portuguese government.
Medicane also said that this European Union certification (EU-GMP – Good Manufacturing Practices) provides the company with the ability to “manufacture and export cannabis-based preparations, extracts and substances for medical and research use in permitted jurisdictions throughout the European Union, making it well positioned to be a hub for cannabis exports to Europe.”

“The journey to build a state-of-the-art growing and manufacturing facility to exacting EU standards and achieving EU-GMP certification is challenging but very rewarding,” said Vera Broder, CEO of MHI Cultivo Medicinal. “We are privileged to be recognized as a Project of National Interest by the Portuguese government and we are grateful for the continuous support of the city of Campo Maior and Infarmed throughout the entire process. MediCane is committed to contributing to the support of the Portuguese economy, providing employment to the national workforce, hiring qualified and specialized professionals and improving the country's economy. We are also going to start registering our products locally in order to make them available to Portuguese patients”, assured Vera Broder.
“As a pharmaceutical company, EU-GMP certification consolidates MediCane's strategy to bridge the gap between the pharmaceutical industry and cannabis,” said Yoav Nir, CEO of MediCane Agro. “We have been exporting GACP medical cannabis to Germany since August 2021 and now aim to export our first EU-GMP products to European customers during the second quarter of this year.”
In addition to its own organic cultivation, from Portuguese greenhouses, “MediCane is in the process of partnering with other players in the European Union, North America and Israel to provide contract manufacturing services and convert their cannabis into EU-GMP products”. The company will “leverage its growing distribution network and pharmaceutical partners in Germany, Portugal, Spain, Poland and Australia to increase the supply of high quality, consistent and reliable to patients in need”, stresses the statement.
MediCane Health Inc. is an international pharmaceutical company involved in the research and development, cultivation, production and marketing of cannabis-based medicines and is currently one of approximately 24 approved cannabis manufacturers in the world.
