The Territorial Command of the National Republican Guard (GNR) of Viseu, through the Criminal Investigation Nucleus of Moimenta da Beira, arrested a 22-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man on March 20, in the municipality of Sernancelhe, for drug trafficking. narcotics.

According to the press release, “as part of a party that took place in a nightclub in the locality, the Guard military approached, in the vicinity of the establishment, some suspects who showed suspicious behavior, having seized a dose of hashish and seven ecstasy pills in the store. possession of the woman and ten doses of hashish to the man. Both were arrested.”

Following the same action, four men aged between 18 and 32 were identified and four police records were drawn up for possession of narcotic drugs and 16 doses of hashish and a dose of lime were seized.

Taking into account the image released with the communiqué, Cannareporter questioned the Communications and Public Relations Officer of the Territorial Command of Viseu, Lieutenant Colonel Adriano Resende, about whether the quantities seized were not within the limits allowed for personal consumption, to which the Officer replied that, at the time, he did not have the records in his possession but that “if they were seized, it was because they did not comply with the limit”.

The detainees were made arguidos and the facts communicated to the Judicial Court of Moimenta da Beira.

Portugal decriminalized the possession and use of all drugs in 2001, but the purchase, sale and cultivation of cannabis continue to be punishable by law, with hundreds of arrests for small-quantity consumption ending up as court cases for “trafficking of narcotics”. Detainees are rarely actually arrested, being released after being presented to a judge, which represents administrative costs for the State. The GNR makes arrests for possession or cultivation of cannabis in Portugal practically every day.
