The President of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves, announced a bill to approve the recreational use of cannabis in the country, during the official act commemorating the first 100 days of his government. According to Chaves, the initiative will be forwarded for discussion in Congress, which has already approved the regulation on medical cannabis. Reactions among Costa Ricans are divided: some believe that legalization is the best option for the country, others do not.

“We have prepared the regulation of industrial hemp for medical use and we will promote the bill to legalize cannabis for recreational use,” the president said in his speech, without, however, providing specific details on how adult cannabis use will be regulated.

The truth is that the proposal did not take anyone by surprise: during the campaign, Rodrigo Chaves had already stated several times that he was in agreement with the legalization and that he would proceed with the necessary reforms. The current president also said that there was scientific evidence to support the decision, explaining the case of several countries that legalized and obtained good results.

Getting this law passed in Costa Rica, however, will not be an easy task. The proposal still generates controversy and many adverse reactions in some sectors, with some political parties opposing legalization in the past.
