The Portuguese pharmaceutical company Biojam announced that it intends to place a product on the Portuguese market, but that it has not yet succeeded because Infarmed has been analyzing its application for at least two years. In interview with Jornal Económico, the company's CEO, Carlos Jorge Monteiro, confessed that he has been waiting, since 2021, for a response from Infarmed to the requests for ACM under evaluation.

A Portuguese pharmaceutical company is preparing to enter the medical cannabis market. This is Biojam, managed by Carlos Jorge Monteiro, who in an interview with Jornal Económico revealed the company's plans for the launch of a new cannabis-based product. However, the road to effective authorization does not seem to be an easy one, according to what he revealed to Jornal Económico. Since 2021, the company has been waiting for feedback from Infarmed regarding an ACM.

Biojam is not yet on the list of companies licensed to operate with controlled substances such as cannabis. The Cannareporter asked Infarmed for clarification on this issue and is awaiting a response.

Manager accuses Infarmed of “lack of knowledge”

In the same newspaper, manager Carlos Jorge Monteiro accuses Infarmed of “lack of knowledge” of the cannabis industry, stating that in 2021 the company would have already submitted the dossier for approval of a new drug. However, the regulator still failed to respond. Monteiro also regrets the lack of preparation in the medicine market for the use of cannabis-based medicines, “due to lack of knowledge and because medicine in Portugal is very conventional, it likes synthetic medicines, produced in the laboratory”, he says.

Biojam's CEO also states that companies that have recently terminated or resized operations in Portugal (Tilray e Clever leaves), may be related to the lack of knowledge of the regulator and the conventional market.”

Cannareporter is also trying to contact Carlos Jorge Monteiro to better understand what ACM he is referring to and what kind of license Biojam has to operate in the sector.
