A Industrial Hemp Solutions (IHS) announced that it is working with Faculty of Agronomy at the University of Buenos Aires (FAUBA) to evaluate 15 varieties of hemp seeds and fibers to be included in Argentina's official seed catalog. If approved, these strains would more than double the number of hemp options available to farmers, which are currently limited to just 13 varieties, most of which are grown for cannabinoid production.

O SENASA, National Health and Agro-Food Quality Service, supports the trials and sees the introduction of new hemp varieties as an important step towards the development of the industry in Argentina. The government has adopted a strategy of using hemp as a whole plant, which seeks to maximize the health and environmental benefits as well as the economic potential of the plant.

Cultivation has been suggested as a source for superfoods such as hemp seeds, as well as for the production of oils, flours and proteins. Authorities also indicated that there are opportunities in fiber markets for building materials, textiles, cellulose and bioplastics.

Investments can create 10.000 jobs

SENASA is responsible for regulating and certifying products of animal and plant origin and is committed to developing the hemp industry in accordance with established quality and safety standards. Gabriel Giménez, the National Director of the National Seed Institute (INASE), which facilitated the importation of test seeds, believes that the introduction of these new varieties will strengthen the industry, while guaranteeing the quality and safety of the crops.

A FAUBA team has been evaluating the 15 hemp varieties since September 2022. In January, Argentina launched an agency to support industrial hemp and medical cannabis, and shortly afterwards, the Ministry of Science declared its intention to invest more than 106 million dollars (about 99,250 million euros) in 13 research and development projects in hemp and cannabis in six provinces.

In addition, the government created last October a technology company aimed at advancing the industrial hemp and medical cannabis sectors, which could create 10.000 new jobs, 500 million dollars (468,150 million euros) in domestic sales and 50 million dollars (46,815 million euros) in annual exports.

Maximiliano Baranoff, Director of Innovation and New Business at Industrial Hemp Solutions, stated that the Argentine bioeconomy has enormous potential and hemp is positioned as a synonym of development and progress.
