The Portuguese startup 8000Kicks announced the launch of a peculiar piece of footwear, called WEEDO, made with hemp flowers, in partnership with Royal Queen Seeds and with the execution of Nisiseltor Studio. The model, with a limited edition of 100 copies, was inspired by a recurring customer question — “Can we smoke our shoes?” — and the company got creative, using the flower of the plant (rather than the fiber) to produce this unique model.
They're called WEEDO and are limited edition shoes made with sustainable materials, including cotton and hemp laces, hemp insoles and a hemp interior. Each pair of shoes contains between 400g and 500g of flowers, in a completely manual manufacturing process that takes up to 30 hours. To manufacture the shoes, an industrial grinder was needed to crush the flowers, which were later sewn by hand. To ensure the shoes are vegan and sustainable, a water-based glue was used to bond the materials used in their design.
Royal Queen Seeds CEO Shai Ramsahai was "thrilled" with the partnership with 8000Kicks and Nisiseltor Studio to "materialize this exclusive product for our customers". For Bernardo Carreira, CEO of 8000Kicks, the “limited edition demonstrates our commitment to innovation and customer demand. We believe this project will surprise our audience that is looking for a more eccentric pair”. The company said that this was both an innovative and creative step, as the idea for the product's design came precisely from a recurring question from 8000Kicks customers, "Can we smoke these shoes"?
The shoes, due to the reduced quantity produced, their unique and unconventional material, but also their price, were designed for collectors. The company announced the production of only 100 units, due to cost limitations and the specialized labor required.
WEEDO's will be available exclusively on the 8000Kicks and RQS websites for an advertised price of between $1.000 and $1.500. The release date will be announced soon. However, interested customers can register to buy on the company's website.
