Brazil: Researchers discover native plant that contains only CBD

It's called 'Trema micrantha (L.) Blume', it's part of the 'Cannabaceae' family and it's a native Brazilian species. So far, nothing special, if this plant was not capable of expanding the use of CBD without the legal barriers associated with cannabis. This is the result of a search by researchers from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), who identified CBD in the fruits and flowers of 'Trema micrantha'. Despite not being the first plant discovered with cannabinoids present, the particularity is that this only presents cannabidiol (CBD).

The research coordinator, Rodrigo Soares Moura Neto, from the Institute of Biology (IB) at UFRJ, explains that the trema micrantha blume would be able to overcome the legal barriers imposed today on cannabis.

According to Moura Neto, when cannabidiol is sold, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) imposes restrictions on the formula, which can only have 0,2% THC. “In the case of this native plant, this would not be a problem, because it does not contain any THC. There would also be no legal restriction on cultivation, because it can be planted at will — in fact, it is already spread throughout Brazil and would be an easier and cheaper source of obtaining CBD”, reported the researcher.

Chemists, biologists, geneticists and botanists are mapping out the most effective methods of analyzing and extracting cannabidiol from the plant. According to the professor, in six months the processes will begin vitro, at which point it will be analyzed whether the component has the same activity and properties as cannabidiol extracted from cannabis.

The investigation has financial support of 500.000 Brazilian reais (about 95.000 euros), granted through the Agricultural Sciences public notice, from the Carlos Chagas Filho Research Support Foundation of Rio de Janeiro (Faperj), which is linked to the Secretariat of Science , Technology and Innovation of the state government of Rio de Janeiro.
