Canhify bets on hemp with green biorefinery, in partnership with the University of Coimbra

Canhify, formerly Hemporama, reinforced its commitment to sustainability and its mission to lead the development of innovative, high-quality hemp products in Portugal. The company wants to consolidate itself as a reference in the cultivation and processing of textile plants in Portugal, starting by investing in a green biorefinery project, in partnership with the University of Coimbra.
Canhify is a Portuguese company that operates in the industrial hemp sector and has launched a line of agricultural bio-stimulants on the market in recent months, the result of a strategic collaboration with Umimare and the University of Coimbra. Now in 2024, Canhify intends to intensify its strategic partnerships and focus on innovation and development of hemp-based products. The company, which operates on more than 16 hectares with more than 450kg of seeds, made it known in its website which operates in three different locations, has five partners and uses three different varieties of hemp.
Through a green biorefinery project, in collaboration with the Center for Rapid and Sustained Product Development and the University of Coimbra, Canhify aims to produce liquid cellulose, plywood and, mainly, textile fibers. According to a press release, the company also intends to develop techniques to use waste and fermented vegetable liquids in the production of bioplastics/biopolymers.
Gonçalo Pereira, company manager, stated that the name change to Canhify represents evolution and continuous commitment to innovation. If Hemporama previously meant 'vision' in Greek ('órama'), Canhify translates the mission of 'doing' ('ify = to make'), marking a commitment to transform hemp into a revolutionary force in the country's industry.
Sérgio Cavaco, partner at Canhify, emphasized the importance of partnerships, highlighting that true innovation comes from cooperation. “By joining forces with academic institutions and other innovative companies, Canhify is taking steps towards shaping the future of the hemp sector. With the development of this project and the launch of new products, Canhify reinforces its position as a defender of the democratization of hemp, in the belief that the crop, versatile and sustainable, can be incorporated into various industries,” he stated.
