Spain: Director of the Special Anti-Drug Inspectorate proposes campaigns on the risk of cannabis consumption
The director of the Special Anti-Drug Inspectorate, Rosa Ana Morán Martínez, recently warned that Spain has become 'the main producer of cannabis in Europe' and defended the implementation of information campaigns on the risks of its use. Rosa Morán also highlighted the need to implement more robust regulation, to combat the growing confusion between the medicinal and recreational uses of the substance, in a scenario of 'normalization of consumption, especially among young people'.
Em interview Speaking to 'Escritura Pública', Rosa Ana Morán, head of the Special Anti-Drug Inspectorate, raised a warning sign: Spain is currently the largest producer of cannabis in Europe. This title, instead of being a source of pride, raised concerns for the inspector, who highlights the increase in consumption, combined with the increasingly notorious presence of criminal organizations, especially from the Balkans and China, involved in production and illegal marketing.
Morán expressed his concern about the “increasingly specialized, digital and transnational” drug trafficking, highlighting the dangers associated with being the main producer of cannabis. He argued that rising consumption and the infiltration of criminal organizations pose substantial challenges to public security and require an immediate response.
A point that particularly concerns Morán is the perception that young people have regarding the harm caused by cannabis consumption, which results 'from misinformation disseminated on social media, which often leads young people to consider that smoking tobacco is more harmful than consume cannabis. To combat this trend, Morán now advocates for informative advertising campaigns, clearly highlighting the harms associated with cannabis consumption. A crucial point that the inspector also highlighted was the high concentration of THC in current plants, which could pose more serious potential harm to users.
Given this scenario, Morán highlights the urgency of avoiding confusion, proposing stricter regulation of the medicinal use of cannabis, which allows the positive benefits of cannabis for medicinal purposes to be managed, while warning and avoiding the dangers associated with recreational consumption.
