Portugal: Microcredential Course in Metrology for Medicinal Cannabis with registrations open until October 18th
Registration is open until October 18th for the Microcredential course – Metrology for Medicinal Cannabis, which aims to train professionals in the field with essential knowledge of measurement, calibration, and quality control applied to the medicinal cannabis industry. The course is promoted by the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre and will take place online and at Medicane's facilities in Campo Maior.
The training, with 17 hours of online theory and practice and 8 hours in person, totaling 2,5 ECTS, is aimed at technicians and managers who work or intend to work in areas related to the production, control, and certification of medicinal cannabis-based products. The course aims to introduce the fundamental concepts of metrology—the science of measurement—applied to the three main categories: scientific, industrial, and legal metrology. Each plays a distinct role in the medicinal cannabis value chain, from research and equipment calibration to traceability and transparency in commercial transactions.
According to the organization, which is part of the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre, Scientific Metrology will be addressed in the context of creating and maintaining international measurement standards, with a special focus on the International System of Units (SI) and terminological standardization. Industrial Metrology will focus on the management of measuring equipment used in the cultivation, processing, and quality control of medicinal cannabis products. Legal Metrology will address measurement accuracy in situations that directly impact health, safety, and market transparency.
The learning objectives include:
- Understand the Portuguese Quality System, the history of metrology and its relevance in the medicinal cannabis industry;
- Apply concepts of rounding, significant figures and specific measurements in laboratory and industrial contexts;
- Analyze and interpret calibration certificates and test reports, ensuring traceability and reliability of results;
- Simulate calibrations and tests, define acceptance criteria and establish calibration frequency for critical equipment.
The micro-credential is specifically designed for technical managers and professionals who wish to deepen their knowledge of equipment management and metrological control in the context of medicinal cannabis. Candidates who are professionals in the plant or animal production sectors, veterinary sciences, or related fields may apply for a training grant equivalent to the tuition fee, which is €250.
