A Order of Pharmacists – Central Regional Section is organizing the conferences "Medicinal Cannabis – Science, Regulation and Pharmaceutical Practices"The first thematic session will take place on November 22nd at the Plural Cooperative Auditorium in Coimbra, with the theme "Medicinal Cannabis: The Process of Using Cannabis-Based Products".
This event is specifically designed for professionals in the sector and, according to the event website, its objective is "to promote the updating of pharmacists' knowledge in Medicinal Cannabis, covering the areas of production, distribution, regulatory affairs, dispensing and therapeutic education" and, at the same time, "to contribute to improving the effectiveness and safety of cannabis-based products, as well as optimizing their accessibility for patients."
For this first session, the topics under discussion are varied and comprehensive. Following the opening session, there will be a presentation entitled "From the Endocannabinoid System to Cannabinoids" by Dr. Maria Helena Teixeira, from the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences.
The event continues with the lecture “Cannabis-based Products” with pharmacists Ângela Rodrigues and Henrique Santos, who will discuss topics such as pharmaceutical prescription and dispensing, therapeutic actions, and methods of administration of these products.
After lunch, the day continues with the round table “Barriers and facilitators in the process of using cannabis-based products”, in which Pedro da Mata (doctor), Henrique Santos (pharmacist), Paula Mota (founder of Mothers for Cannabis Association) and a representative of infarmed They will give their perspective on the difficulties that current legislation and procedures pose in each case, also outlining possible solutions for them.
The day concludes with a discussion on the "European situation regarding the use of medicinal cannabis," in which Ayesha, from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Lisbon, will present a comparative study on the use of cannabis-based products in Europe.
According to Dr. Henrique Santos, coordinator of these conferences, this type of event is important to "bring the experience of doctors, pharmacists, and patients themselves" to the debate because, for this pharmacist, "we are not talking about cannabis, we are talking about a biological system that regulates a series of functions in our body [SE] and that is important to understand." At the same time, pharmacists, according to him, have "a fundamental role in dispensing and supporting patients, giving them information on how it should be used" or even preparing compounded medications that are personally served to that patient, although this is not permitted in Portugal.
Participation in this 1st Thematic Session costs €15 per person and can be done online. here.
The 2nd Thematic Session will take place on January 10, 2026, also in Coimbra, and its general theme is "From Cultivation to Medicine – the Handling and Pharmaceutical Forms of Medicinal Cannabis". The program and guest speakers will be announced soon.
