The United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) today accepted the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation 5.1 to remove cannabis and cannabis resin from Schedule IV of the 1961 Single Convention on Drugs and Narcotics. The vote was the first of the session and the one where the difference between votes in favor and against was the smallest. The close vote counted with 27 votes in favour, 1 abstention and 25 votes against from all 53 participants.

WHO recommendation 5.1 consists of “Exclude cannabis and cannabis resin from Annex IV of the 1961 Convention″. This recommendation was widely awaited by the industry to allow scientific research to be carried out. This vote is a victory for the industry as it recognizes the medicinal value of cannabis and cannabis resin in the reading of the conventions, something that has not happened before and that has made scientific research into the benefits of the medicinal use of cannabis extremely difficult.

The United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs is meeting at 63rd session of the United Nations Commission on Drugs and Narcotics (CND), in Vienna, Austria. Attention is focused on the reclassification of cannabis, which was passed in a close vote.

63rd session of the United Nations Commission on Drugs and Narcotics (CND) started today in Vienna, Austria. The agenda for this session focuses on the United Nations (UN) vote reclassification of cannabis, the result of which will have far-reaching repercussions for the industry around the world.
