the canadian company Tilray has just announced a strategic alliance with the pharmaceutical company Sandoz Canada Inc., which is part of the group Novartis, one of the main global leaders in the generic drug market.

This partnership is "an important milestone on the long road to the legitimization of cannabis as conventional medicine", says a statement sent by the company's CEO, Brendan Kennedy. It is recalled that the Canadian company Tilray, a subsidiary of Privateer Holdings, was authorized by the Portuguese government in 2017 to plant medicinal cannabis in Cantanhede, where it is already developing processing and transformation units in partnership with the Biotechnology Park Biocant

According to Brendan Kennedy, “Tilray is the first Canadian Federal Government licensed medical cannabis producer to form a strategic alliance with a global pharmaceutical company to improve the availability and quality of medical cannabis products for patients who need it.”

Tilray will therefore use Sandoz Canada's expertise to train Canadian pharmacists, physicians and researchers on Tilray's medical cannabis products.

Another objective of this alliance is to develop new cannabis-based medicines that offer an alternative to products that can be smoked. Following the necessary changes to Canadian regulations, Sandoz Canada will distribute Tilray products to Canadian hospitals and pharmacies.

In addition to the agreement with Sandoz Canada, Tilray also established a partnership with NOWEDA, one of Germany's largest pharmaceutical companies, which distributes medicines to more than 20 German pharmacies and to the Drug Mart Shoppers, Canada's largest pharmacy chain.

In a press release, Brendan Kennedy also mentions that this news is part of a series of announcements that Tilray will make in the coming weeks.
