The XIX Pharmaceutical Conferences of the University Institute of Health Sciences (IUCS) from Porto will include a debate on Medicinal Cannabis in a panel dedicated to the theme “The Border between Drugs and Drugs: from Medicinal Potential to Addictive Behavior”.

The Conferences will take place on the 25th of May, in the Porto Customs and have several guest speakers to launch the discussion on Medicinal Cannabis with future health professionals in Portugal.

Cannativa — Associação de Estudos sobre Cannabis will be represented by Javier Pedraza, Physician of General and Family Medicine (MGF), experienced in treatments with Cannabis and derivatives, and by Dr. Ana Rita Andrade, Internal Physician of the last year in FGM, Multiple Sclerosis patient at the age of 31 and cannabis user for therapeutic purposes.

Other speakers, such as Félix Carvalho, from the Toxicology Laboratory of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto, will also be heard to try to understand the boundary that separates the drug from the drug, from its medicinal potential to its addictive behavior.

Cannabis: Drug or Medicine?
Cannabis Sativa L. enters the pharmacological debate for being a species that, in addition to therapeutic purposes, can also have chemical synthesis, enabling its pharmaceutical use.

The properties and particularities associated with the species Cannabis Sativa L. come from its composition, which includes hundreds of cannabinoids, terpenoids and flavonoids, which make it the subject of numerous studies and clinical and pharmacological trials.

Despite scientific evidence and considerable advances in understanding the mechanisms of action and therapeutic potential of many of the substances that make up cannabis, there are still several obstacles to its use, including potential interactions with other drugs, lack of medical or the mismanagement of what exists on the part of patients, not to mention the legal ones.

For the IUCS Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, chaired by Vítor Seabra, the training of future health professionals is crucial in the safe application of these therapies, which is why he will be present in both the opening and closing sessions of the Conferences.
