Catholic University debates the future of cannabis regulation

A Portuguese Catholic University, by Catholic Global School of Law, promotes on the 16th of December an online conference dedicated to the Future of Cannabis Regulation. "The Future of Cannabis Regulation: a global conversation around the most recent events in the UN, US, and EU" will focus on a more academic perspective, of reflection and anticipation from the point of view of international law and drug policy, in view of the events of recent months. 

The debate is being organized by Professor Gonçalo Saraiva Matias, lawyer and dean of the Católica Global School of Law, and by lawyer and university professor João Taborda da Gama. In addition to the organizers, the conference also includes the participation of Dan Rodriguez, professor of law at Northwestern University, Kasia Malinowska, director of the Open Society Global Drug Policy Program, of the Open Society Foundation, and Marie Sanchez, lawyer at Nooa Avocats in Paris. .

Some of the topics to look at include:

• the recent UN decision to remove the cannabis the Annex IV list of the Convention on Drugs and Narcotics and its effects on patients and the medical cannabis industry;
• the impacts of the US elections and what to expect from the new President Joe Biden, and from Congress;
• the meaning and scope of the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (Kanavape case) and the position of the European Commission in relation to the CBD;
• the social justice challenges posed by the regulation of cannabis  in its responsible use by adults.

The conference will be in English and access is free.
