GroVida and Holigen create Association of Licensed Cannabis Companies

A GroVida and holigen recently announced a joint initiative to form an Association of Licensed Cannabis Companies (ALCC). The new association's mission is to unite licensed medical cannabis producers in Portugal to provide an important voice and act as an industry body as this new market evolves. All producers licensed by Infarmed are invited to join.

Speakers at the Grovida open day, which took place in July, included Euan Keenan (founder and CEO of GroVida) and João Lopes (Technical Director of GroVida), who provided insights into the current and future environment of the industry. Euan Keenan said that “GroVida is positioned to take advantage of opportunities in the European Union and beyond. With its highly respected regulatory standards, progressive political attitudes and an ideal growing climate, Portugal is in a strong position to become the world leader in cannabis.”

GroVida organized this event with a visit to its facilities, located in the Algarve. Clara Carneiro (Pharmaceutical Advisory Director) welcomed the guests, including presidents of local authorities, politicians from different parties, representatives of CCDR Algarve, IAPMEI, bank associates and partners such as the University of Algarve. “It is very gratifying to see the intense work that GroVida has developed over the last three years recognized. This open day aimed to show how GroVida has made a sustained growth, complying with rules, stages and times that it had previously planned. Portugal is legally a country with very demanding pharmaceutical regulations, which gives us competitive quality”, she stressed.

Euan Keenan, João Lopes and Gonçalo Saraiva Matias also gave perspectives on the current and future environment of the industry and celebrated the development of GroVida, including its first commercial export. They also took the opportunity to announce the formation of the Association of Licensed Cannabis Companies (ALCC), a joint initiative of GroVida and Holigen.

GroVida obtained a license for the cultivation, import and export of medicinal cannabis from Infarmed in 2020. Based in the municipalities of Tavira and São Brás de Alportel, in the south of the Algarve, GroVida has an operational cultivation unit with “20.000 m2 of greenhouses”. high tech". According to the company, “more than 40 new local jobs were created, hosting various internships in Portuguese universities”. In early 2021, the company made its first commercial export of medical cannabis within the EU, being “able to supply GMP and GACP accredited flowering and extracts worldwide”.

Euan Keenan noted that “with its highly respected regulatory standards, progressive political attitudes and ideal growing climate, Portugal is in a strong position to become the world leader in cannabis”.
