Exclusive Interview with Paula Carvalho, from DGAV
Ana Paula Carvalho, Deputy Director General of DGAV – General Directorate of Food and Veterinary Medicine, has been under fire in recent months, because of the industrial hemp sector. In a conversation lasting more than an hour, Cannareporter tried to clarify the many doubts that plague farmers who cultivate in Portugal. Paula Carvalho admitted that there may have been delays in responding to requests and even miscommunication, but she guarantees that she is available to dialogue with farmers. However, she leaves a very clear message: “Industrial cultivation is all about fiber and seeds”.
Manel Cruz needs no introduction. His relationship with cannabis began when he was a teenager, when he joined Ornatos Violeta, and to this day it has varied in the way and intensity with which he uses it. The Regional Secretary for Agriculture of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, António Ventura, yesterday highlighted the need to diversify crops for a more sustainable agriculture. The Regional Secretary spoke at the opening of the CannAzores, I International Hemp Congress, which took place yesterday at Associação Agrícola dos Açores, in Ribeira Grande, Ilha de São Miguel, highlighting that the region is available to experiment with this culture with hemp producers, investing in education and training, in order to create employment and attractiveness for bring the youth down to earth.
Graça Castanho, university professor and businesswoman, is the main organizer of the I International Hemp Congress, which takes place on the 3rd of October at Associação Agrícola dos Açores, in Ribeira Grande, São Miguel Island. Cannareporter spoke with the organizer of the event, to better understand why this Congress is being held and why it is “urgent to put Portugal on the map of industrial hemp production”.
The GNR Territorial Command of Castelo Branco this morning issued a press release (with video) in which he states that he arrested a 32-year-old man for cultivating narcotics, yesterday, September 23, in Sertã, Castelo Branco. THE Cannareporter learned that this is Pawel Soyer, a farmer who has been trying to grow hemp for several years in Portugal and that had already been arrested last year for the same reasons.
One of the founders of the cooperative lusicanna and farmer dedicated to the cultivation of industrial hemp, Hugo Monteiro, was arrested yesterday by the GNR in Serpa, in the district of Beja. Cannareporter knows that Hugo Monteiro, one of the farmers who has criticized DGAV's actions and delays, had already sent the application three times with the form and the corresponding payment of fees for the granting of the authorization to grow hemp for industrial purposes, but had not yet obtained it.
