Veterinarians warn that there are no studies that ensure treatment

"It lifted her spirits, and today Hudson is a happy dog again," Fasman, a resident of San Francisco, Calif., said in an interview with the Associated Press. “Not that there's been a complete change, but it's back to the way it was before.

With more and more US states legalizing cannabis for human consumption, more and more people are administering cannabis extracts, ointments and edibles to their pets to treat a variety of ailments, from arthritis to cancers. Most products contain only cannabidiol, known as CBD, with little or no tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, a compound with psychoactive effects.

Veterinarians say there isn't enough scientific information to prove the safe use of cannabis for treating animals, so it can't be prescribed or recommended.

“Our hands are tied,” said Ken Pawlowski, president of the California Veterinary Association. “People ask if they can use medical cannabis on their pets, but unfortunately there are no answers.”

Karl Jandrey, a veterinarian and professor at the University of California, says he tells his clients to "use at your own risk, and be aware that there is a danger of spending money without improvements, or even negative reactions."

Even without scientific information or veterinary advice, many owners are convinced that cannabis has improved the health and well-being of their animals. Lyanne Tingle, who runs an animal adoption center, regularly uses ointments and cannabis-based foods for older dogs who suffer from health problems.

“We have seen a change of spirit. They feel no pain, look happier, and move better,” said Lyanne. "It's like coming back to life."

With an eye on this audience, TreatWell Health is one of many companies emerging in the US specializing in the sale of cannabis-based products for animals.

According to Alisson Ettel, co-founder of the company, these products can be used to combat anxiety, lack of appetite, pain, inflammation and seizures, as well as kidney and liver problems, cancer and glaucoma.

“We realize that they bring us a lot of animals when there are no more options or drugs working,” said Alisson. "They're a last resort, and cannabis is very good for that kind of situation."
