USA: Massachusetts driving schools to include the effects of cannabis on driving in their lessons

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced through a communiqué the integration of notions about cannabis in driving lessons. Future drivers will be trained on issues such as the effect of cannabis on the brain, the physical effects, visual and physical reaction times and the dangers of driving while intoxicated.
The Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Registry (RMV), in partnership with members of the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission and American Automobile Association (AAA), announced that, effective January 2023, Massachusetts will be the nation's first which allows the recreational use of cannabis to adopt a series of notions compiled by the AAA. The measure is intended to educate teenagers about the risks of driving under the influence of cannabis. The curriculum is taught through an informative and easy-to-follow 25-minute educational video.
The announcement was made at the Worcester Motor Vehicle Register by Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito, Motor Vehicle Registrar Colleen Ogilvie, Cannabis Control Commission Commissioner Kimberly Roy and AAA Vice President of Public and Government Affairs, Northeast Section , Mary Maguire, as well as Newton Police Chief John Carmichael.
The current driver education module covering substance-driving will be updated to include research-based information on cannabis, explaining THC's mechanism of action and how it affects cognition, vision, reaction time and the perception of time and distance.
"Adding cannabis information to Massachusetts Registry driver education classes is important to the safety and well-being of teens learning to drive," said Gov. Charlie Baker. "The new cannabis education will help individuals make informed decisions and I am pleased that Massachusetts is leading the way in including this in the education of future drivers."
