Malta's Responsible Use of Cannabis Authority has confirmed that it has had 26 license applications for social clubs in the country since February, although there are still no set dates for issuing licenses. Malta was the first country in Europe to legalize the adult use of cannabis in 2021.

Leonid McKay, who heads the Authority for the Responsible Use of Cannabis, said in remarks to Times of Malta, that there is a long and rigorous verification process and that it would not be in a position to give a forecast for the issuance of the first licenses.

The Authority for the Responsible Use of Cannabis has been receiving applications for clubs — Cannabis Harm Reduction Associations — since the beginning of March and this will be, for now, the only way through which it will be possible to acquire cannabis for recreational consumption, although legalization took place in 2021. Clubs cannot be for profit and can only sell their own product, that is, only seeds can be imported from abroad, and everything must be grown by the association in national territory, and cannabis itself cannot be imported (or exported) .
