The first cannabis production plant for medicinal purposes in Greece was inaugurated on the 26th of January, in Examilia, Corinthia. According to the news GreekReporter, the investment was made by Tikkun Europe, a subsidiary of Tikkun Olam, which is headquartered in Israel, and was well received by the Greek Minister of Development & Investment, Adonis Georgiadis, who spoke on a “historic day”.
Adonis Georgiadis said that the factory will not only benefit Greek patients, but will also be able to provide products to be exported throughout Europe, stating that “this factory can carry out huge exports to all major European countries”.
Nikos Beis, CEO of Tikun Europe, declared that this factory is the largest pharmaceutical facility in the industry in Europe. “A new era is starting for our country with the operation of our Tikun Europe facilities, paving the way for Greece to become a major player in the field of production and export of medical cannabis products,” said Beis.
Tikun plans to harvest 10 tons of cannabis flower
According to Tikun Europe, the factory has a production capacity of 10 tonnes of dried flowers and will be used to produce medicinal cannabis products in various pharmaceutical forms. The company intends to start cultivation immediately, with the plants being grown under strict protocols to preserve their unique characteristics. The facility is expected to reach full production capacity in the near future.
Since June 2018, the General Secretariat for Industry of the Greek Ministry of Development and Investment has licensed 134 plant cultivation facilities nationwide, following the legislative framework for the licensing of factories for the cultivation and production of medicinal cannabis products.
Greece expects that the production of medicinal cannabis will bring €1,5 billion annually to state revenue. Georgiadis expressed Greece's aim to become one of the leading European countries in the production of medicinal cannabis, stating that the country's climate is friendly to the plant, giving them a "natural advantage".
The Greek minister also revealed that foreigners will be able to buy cannabis for medicinal purposes in Greece with a prescription from their doctor, adding that the purchase can be made through pharmacies.
The inauguration of Greece's first medical cannabis production company is a significant milestone for the country as it aims to become a major player in the growing medical cannabis industry.
