Brazil: Biomedical doctors, nutritionists and physiotherapists can prescribe CBD

O Federal Council of Biomedicine (CFBM) this week approved a measure that allows professionals in the field, namely biomedical professionals, to prescribe, without medical guidance or prescription, herbal products based on cannabidiol (CBD), advanced the 'The Globe'. However, not all biomedical doctors will be able to prescribe, only those trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine – Acupuncture. In addition to biomedical doctors, doctors, dentists, nutritionists and physiotherapists can now prescribe cannabidiol-based products in Brazil. 

According to professionals in the field, this decision will expand the horizons of the profession and provide new opportunities for work and professional careers.

The CFBM states that the measure represents “a significant advance in the field of health, opening up new therapeutic possibilities for patients seeking natural alternatives for the treatment of various health conditions”.

However, the council warns that in order to prescribe biomedical doctors they must also be specialized in Traditional Chinese Medicine – Acupuncture. In addition, "it is essential that biomedical doctors have training and in-depth knowledge about the safe and effective use of this substance", says the CFBM note, quoted by 'O Globo'.

The resolution was published in the Official Gazette of the Union last Friday, June 23, and signed by the president of the CFBM, Silvio José Cecchi.
